Give the City Back to People: New Mobility Can Make Our Cities a Joy Again
Published in Paperback by Cityscope & Mobility Co (September, 1994)
Authors: George W. Jernstedt and Tom K. Phares
Average review score:

A visionary glimpse at the future of city mobility
The subject of transforming cities with superior urban transit systems coupled with more extensive pedestrian walkways to enhance mobility is seldom targeted at the general audience. Thankfully, a book has been written that addresses this important issue so vital to our quality of life without strenuous and technical prose. Partly autobiographical, the author reflects on his role in helping to design the "horizontal elevator" or AGT (Automated Guideway Transit) which while only superficially in place in the U.S., is being utilized to a far greater degree abroad (especially in Lille, France where apparently one is able to access virtually every nook of the city without an automobile). Also included is an examination of the inception of the urban metro systems in place in S.F., Atlanta and Washington D.C. in which the author relays the inherent design flaws, thereby contributing to unexpectedly low ridership levels. Best of all is the fascinating and frustrating look back at how Americans once relied primarily on trolleys, buses and passenger rail for mobility until corporate giants, and later the Eisenhower administration, changed the face of the nation to provide us with the "total freedom of mobility" offered by the automobile in place of revolutionizing the original modes of transportation.

Good Guys Wear Black: The Real-Life Heroes of the Police's Rapid-Response Firearm Unit

A young boy's dream
I started out with Andy Mcnab and Chris Ryan. But then I wanted to read something about the minor wars that take place in our own backyard. Heroes are born on the battlefield they say. I dont think i agree anymore, not after reading this book. The worst thing is that we take the men and women in uniform for granted. We dont know what they do at night, or whos life they are saving. Why??? Cause we dont want to know. But one thing is for sure. They are out there every night, risking their life so that you could sleep safe at night. Reading Good guys were black gave me goosebumps and many sleepless nights. Its like when you was a young kid. Playing cops and robber on the backyard. But there is a huge line between now and then. I would like to call that line adrenalin, pain and blood. And from the first page to the last I was hooked. To read about Steves experience on the beat, makes my lips to curve up at both sides. But every time I finished a page,I realizing that this is not a fiction. This is the real thing.

Harlot's Moon
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (March, 1998)
Authors: Ed Gorman and Edward Gorman
Average review score:

The best that mystery has to offer
Monsignor Steven Gray asks his old childhood friend, former FBI psychological profiler, Robert Payne to investigate the murder of Father Daly. Robert, who now works as an investigator for a Cedar Rapids, Iowa law firm, does not want to get involved with what looks to him like an internal church affair. However, for old time sakes, he agrees to look into this and a similar grisly murder of a priest.

Among Daly's possessions are a series of articles about the brutal killings of members of St. Mallory Church. From these clippings and other information, Robert develops a profile on a vicious serial killer. As he gets closer to identifying the culprit, Robert knows he must pick up the pace before another parishioner becomes the next brutalized victim.

HARLOT'S MOON, the latest Robert Payne novel (see HAWK MOON and BLOOD MOON), is a tremendous hard-boiled detective story, starring a great protagonist. When it comes to crime, Robert is as tough as they get, but Ed Gorman makes his star profiler seem human because he provides him with compassionate traits too. Throw in a well-designed fast-paced story line and a strong support cast that constantly move the plot forward and the audience has a top rate psychological who-done-it.

Latin Readings: An Intermediate Rapid Reader
Published in Paperback by Bolchazy Carducci (December, 1998)
Author: Gertrude Drake
Average review score:

Classic method with a new twist
Gertrude Drake's Latin Readings is truly an "Intermediate Rapid Reader." With a variety of passages ranging in style and content, the text offers a diverse approach to the transition from grammatical forms to actually reading Latin. The passages cover a wide range of styles to prevent students from being bored by content, empowering them to read much more Latin and become familiar with the process.

Moreover, Latin Readings revives the interlinear method of study with interlinear vocabulary, not interlinear translation. The Latin text is spaced fairly far apart, so that selected words have definitions or notes right underneath. Seeing the English under the Latin makes the process of reading much easier--we naturally find subject then verb in English; finding subject and verb in Latin is then just a small step. Whereas interlinear translation can be confusing, often requiring the original Latin word order to be rearranged, Drake's text preserves the original order, instead highlighting selected words.

Vocabulary words are generally glossed five times, enlarging vocabulary by repetition. The book also comes with a striped transparency that can cover up the notes and definitions whenever the individual student is ready, giving enough flexibility to ease the tensions in a classroom going through this tough transition. I would highly recommend this book, with its different approach: having notes right underneath the Latin allows students to truly focus on the Latin, sparing them the frustration of having to glance down frequently at footnotes or flipping to the back for glossary. This is a great graded reader intended for rapid reading of exciting and humanistic topics written by Latin authors spanning the whole history of Latin literature, from 150BC to the 18th century AD.

The New Project Management : Tools for an Age of Rapid Change, Complexity, and Other Business Realities
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (May, 2002)
Author: J. Davidson Frame
Average review score:

The best book for org change & reengineering projects
This second edition is a minor update to the original that was published in 1994. When the first edition was published business process reengineering was in vogue. Today we're still doing reengineering, but it goes by the moniker of "organizational change management". A rose by any other name; however, this book remains one of the only project management texts that stays focused on reengineering and organizational change projects while including traditional project planning, scheduling and control techniques.

What makes this book unique is the way the author tackles organizational politics head on, and the sage advice given to deal with it. These comprise the main theme of Part I's first three chapters, which address the business environment, how to bring order out of chaos and engaging change. The final two chapters in Part I cover risk management and customer satisfaction - two main critical success factors for any project, but are especially important in organizational change projects.

Part II starts with a chapter that is boldly titled "Acquiring Political Skills and Building Influence" and segues into another topic that most PM books sidestep: "Building Teams with Borrowed Resources". If you've ever attempted employing matrix management or virtual teams you'll appreciate the advice given in this chapter. The author also gives an excellent discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of self directed teams, which may be ideal in theory, but are not easy to achieve in practice. Chapter 8 in this part is a well written piece on project selection techniques, which reflects the author's approach that is better documented in a book that he coauthored titled "The Project Office".

The remainder of the book is focused on traditional PM techniques, including estimating, outsourcing considerations, earned value (now part of the PMI PMBOK), and project metrics.

If you are involved in organizational change projects this book is the best resource because of the way it combines organizational change management with traditional PM techniques.
